Kit

NOTICE OF INTENT
Now that we are in the final month of planning, we are locking down the options we have to the most assured and the most desired. One of the things we have locked in is the ute; we're taking the PigPatrol, and it will be following the same path as the bikes. This means we'll have fuel become less of an issue, but as we're taking a 44 of Diesel and possibly a 44 of unleaded too, but that means that there's less space on the back for kit...
Nazi rule #1: If it isn't listed here, it doesn't go on the ute!
Jelfs Kit Ideas
Here's a good link to a forum with some really good stuff about what to take and why...
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262998&highlight=nx650
Following on from the decision to take Rhetts ute, we can start to lock in some packing ideas:
Common Gear - we only need 1 set, stored on the ute, and this will service everyone.
Unique Bulky Gear - each rider has this stuff, but it's carried on the ute.
Unique Daily Gear - Each rider will use this in the course of every day riding, so it'll be carried on the bikes.
Luxuries - A list of things it'd be nice to bring along, but if we need space they get diced.

Food
This is a bit of an open-ender; it is based on daily consumption patterns. Cooked or not, there's options, depending on how filling and how much of a hurry we're in etc. I'm sure we'll surprise ourselves with inventiveness, but here's a small list of possible meals:
Oh, and I reckon we bring along a thing of protein-shake, just in case.
Breakfast & Lunch
I've bunched these two together cos the meal creation is pretty much interchangeable. We're probably going to want to avoid significant cooking and time taken to create the foods, and they both need to be filling and energy packed.
- Porridge - Oats, Milk (UHT), Sugar, Dried Fruit,
- Eggs - Eggs (fried, scrambled, omelette), Bacon, Tomato, Toast (Bread),
- Baked Beans on Toast - Guess the ingredients
- Cereal - Cereals (Weetbix, muesli, etc), milk, sugar
- Toast and Spread - Bread, marg/Butter, Peanut Butter, Jam, Vegemite,
- Pancakes -Flour (self-raising), eggs, milk, sugar, Spreads
- French Toast - Bread, Eggs, Sugar, Spice
- Fruit Salad - Fruit, Coffee, Cigarettes
- Sangers - Bread, butter, spreads, salad, cold meat
- Damper/Scones - Don't tell me we're not gonna try this at least once :p
Dinner
- Pasta and Sauce - Water, Pasta, onion, Prebought sauces, meat (cured meats like salami etc travel better)
- Oven Baked fish/chicken - Foil, oil, seasoning, meat, jacket potato, corn, Onion, carrots (root veg lasts longer)
- Grilled Steak and chips/wedges - meat, potatos, oil (a fair bit), sauce, grilled onion, tomato to make it look healthy
- Fried Rice - Water, Rice, meat, oil, onion, nuts, sauces, chicken stock powder
- Stew - Meat, water, root veg, onion, soup mix, bread rolls
- Soup - cos we've run out of meat :p
- Noodles - Cos we're too buggered to make anything
- Chicken Chasseur - cos we're hunters, yo! Seriously, it's pretty much chicken stew.
Snacks and Road food
Energy bars, confectionery, and such snacks to keep energy up during a hard day, and to treat yourself with at the camp.
- Muesli Bars
- Milo
- Chocolate Bars
- Gummi things
- Dried fruit
- Trail Mix
Old Entry
This is the data from the previous page. It's here to make sure we don't forget anything that was listed, but it should be superseded by the above.
Essential Kit - Bikes
We can spread this over all the bikes, as we really shouldnt need a compass each and a GPS each, etc...
- CamelPack - 3l minimum. Again, it will make a difference if we're running a bike-only config or bike and support, but each rider should carry enought o be hydrated at all times.
- Compass - kinda self evident, but maybe jsut the one that is inbuilt in the GPS
- GPS - Garmin Etrek CX or better has been recommended by a guy who knows. 300ish, then load shonkymaps, and grab some waypoints if you can.
- Maps - apparently we'll be struggling to get reasonable topos of there outside of the shonky maps. We'll try to Miners Den closer to teh time.
- Toolkit - defined later
- Basic Med Kit - more than band-aids. defined later
- Cooking Kit - depends on the support vehicle status. If its bike only, this'll be fairly minimal.
- Snatch Strap - just one, for bike recovery... and no comealong or anything as they just take up too much space (bet we'll regret that in time
- Wallets and cash
- Sat Phone (if we can track one down. NextG if we cant)
- Swag (minus the big mattress)
- Camping mat (yoga mat)
- Radios
- Radio w. Throat mike (this needs a discussion)
- Change of clothes
- Spare Parts
- Fishing Rod
Toolkit Specs
This is just what I plan on bringing. Im sure Rhett will have a larger list of things.
- Spanners (10-19, 27)
- Allen Keys
- Pliers
- Phillips Drivers (2,3)
- Flathead Drivers (1,2,3)
- Slip Jaws
- Zip Ties
- Leatherman
- Tyre Irons
- Hand/Foot Pump
- Fibreglass kit
- Metal Mend
- Spark Plugs
- Chain Breaker
- Spare Chain (can we find a common pitch? From my understanding, we can use a heavier/wider chain with a common pitch on a smaller bike, but we cant mix pitch sizes)
- Puncture Repair Kit (in case we run out of tubes)
- CO2 Canisters (being slack)
- Solar Charger (12V to keep batt charged and also charge phone etc)
Cooking Gear
- Coffee machine
- Pot/plate combo
- Lighter
- Cutlery
- Coffee Cup
- Firestarters
- Gas burner
Med Kit - Bike
- Bandage - wide crepe

Spares

- Bunch of spokes
Food/Menu - Bikes
- Water (5l/bike)
- Trail Nut Mix
- Dried fruit
- Some fresh fruit (eg apples)
- Soup Sachets
- Rice
- Tinned Tuna
- Freeze Dried meals
- Jerky (Im unsure about this...)
- Sugar hit
- Vitamin Pills
- Oranges/Limes/Lemons (altho I don't think scurvy is a real problem after only a week or two :p)
- And we can catch fish, if Rhett can live up to the boasts of being the worlds best fisherman :p
Preferred Kit - Support
The support vehicle will be generating its own electricity, so it should be able to keep things cold and charged and such. I've been running through some stuff in my head that could be good to have along, but I keep coming back to the fact that they are built for an interconnected world... My phone goes flat after a day or two, the ipod cant last more than a few hours, etc etc.
So, if we get the luxury of a support vehicle, I would start the list with a laptop, charger and inverter so we can dump video and photos, recharge USB devices, run an independent GPS solution, look up long range weather forecasts/sat maps, etc etc...
After the laptop, I would be interested in an extended menu (see below) and a wider set of spares in case of a big stack. And some luxuries like a couple of different sets of clothes would go a treat too :)
Oh, and a bigger 1st aid kit than whats on the bikes
Food/Menu - Support Vehicle
- Eggs
- Bacon
- Steak
- Fresh fruit
- Snags
- Marshmallows
- Pasta
- Bundy
Dream Gear
- Spare Rim (1 x front, 1 x rear) - dream gear cos each bike has different axle sizes.
