It's a long way away, but a sell-out crowd is likely, so we'd better get our tickets early. That's right, I'm talking about the Kiev Ballet - no, wait, sorry, I meant, The Chaser's Age of Terror Variety Hour! at the Cairns Civic Theatre (11th & 12th April, two shows each night @ 7:30 and 9:30) (Shows in other cities here.) Let's all get our tickets soon to be sure we can see the Chaser lads before they go to jail! While we're on this subject, the tickets for the Cairns leg of the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow are already on sale (1st to 4th May), I know there's a few of us who are big fans of it. (Other cities here.)
Also touring at the moment is Circus Oz, and they will be in Cairns on 5th to 9th March. Get your tickets soon if you want in on this!
By the way: Monty Python's Spamalot is playing in Melbourne!
Moving from comedy to sports, the NRL has moved into pre-season mode with trial games going on all over the place. In Cairns we get to see the Cowboys play the Gold Coast Titans in a warm up for the first match of the season later in the year. (As far as I can tell tickets are at the gate or booked old school over the phone or in person at CDRL Ph: 40316772, Cairns Taipans - Stockland Cairns Ph: 1300taipans, Sportscene Super Warehouse). Of course, southerners may be more interested in aerial ping pong, which I have been informed recently is populated entirely by tall men with big guns. And isn't at all a poofter sport. The revheads would do me in if I didn't mention the mother of all speed-demon days, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on 13th to 16th March.
But we came here for the music, so let's get to it. Brissy folk, if you're into blues there's the Brisbane Blues Festival on the 23rd Feb. The Soundwave Festival (featuring, amongst others, The Offspring, Incubus, Killswitch Engage, Alexisonfire, and Thursday) is sold out in Brisbane but still has tickets in Melbourne.
Get your makeup on for KISS playing in Brisbane on the 18th March. Or, if that's not really your style of music, perhaps you'd rather go boybands: The Backstreet Boys are still touring, believe it or not. Ok, that was a bit wussy, but then so are Maroon 5 and they can pull a crowd too.
Far better music comes from Foo Fighters who are hitting most of the mainland capitals cities (sorry, not Darwin or Canberra) in late April and early May. If you prefer your emotional music to be less real and more Existential Angst, tickets to Bullet For My Valentine go on sale on the 22nd Feb. Jack Johnson is doing the rounds in March as well.
Now, we've all got guilty secrets in our music collection... those artists and albums that we don't want to admit in public that we like. But if you go see James Blunt , Keith Urban, k.d. Lang, Cyndi Lauper (yes, seriously, the one from the eighties!), Michael Bublé or *shudder* Celine Dion, please don't tell me about it, and definitely do not ask me to go with you. (James Blunt was voted the third most annoying thing in Britain recently, something I can attest to, having (against my better judgement) been to one of his concerts. At least he has sense of humour about it (see: Top Gear interview), and is aware of how annoying his own voice is. Plus, on the subject of his name now being Cockney rhyming slang (a 'right James Blunt'), he is said to have responded, "John F. Kennedy got an airport named after him — I got my favourite part of the female anatomy." (thanks wikipedia, fount of pointless knowledge.))
Ugh. Just writing about those performers has made me feel dirty. We need something a bit more serious... how about Korn? Performing in Sydney and Brisbane in April. Also in April, Pennywise, Sum 41 and The Vandals hit Melbourne and Brisbane. Ahhhh, that's better... real music!
And last, but certainly not the least: With a lineup that includes Cut Copy, The Presets, Duran Duran (!!!), The Queens of the Stone Age and The Smashing Pumpkins you can't go past the V Festival, hitting Sydney, Gold Coast, Melbourne & Perth between 29th March & 6th April. If anyone wants to buy me tickets for this gig and flights to get there and back, please feel free!
OK, that's all for now... though if I've forgotten anything, let me know and I'll add it to the list. As long as it's not anything crazy like Sinead O'Connor in concert.
