Asterisk Phone System
Our POTS is connected to a server running an Asterisk bundle called Trixbox. Trixbox has a bunch of cool functionality like SugaCRM, HUDlite, FOP, and a few other things. The server also has a couple of VIOP lines outbound, so call costs are kept down. The following outlines the basics for using and configuring your extension. jelf 18:18, 1 February 2008 (EST)
SoftPhone
I use Xlite, as it's free and quite good. Little to no lag, full functionality, blah blah blah. Use whichever one you want really, but be aware that if Im not conversant with the software, troubleshooting is your own problem. After installing XLite (There's an exe on the Filebox under Utils) right click on the display section of the softphone and select 'Sip Account Settings' to bring up the configuration settings. Add a new one, and use the following to get started. jelf 18:18, 1 February 2008 (EST)
Extensions
(Klondike) - 555
jelf - 554
fosnez - 556
jedi - 557
ghost - 558
Cordless - 559
Password or secret for each extension is the extension number.
Voicemail is *97 from your own extension, or *98 to be prompted for your extension
Voicemail Passwords are '1234' to begin with. Change your passwords.
Domain (Sip server) is *.*.*.15 Fill in the stars with the proper IP range.
The inbound rules are set to continue ringing forever, so if you want to divert people to your message bank, configure it on the XLite settings.
Call forwarding and conferencing and such should be fairly intuitive. I'll write more here if required. jelf 18:18, 1 February 2008 (EST)
Functionality
In addition to the basic phone calls, there are several additional functions/methods of use. The dialing plans make local routed calls (eg pizza, taxi, 13****, 000) get sent via the landline, as these calls have origin determination, so it's important that they come from the right exchange. Normal calls will default out the VOIP trunk, as cost is a factor. International calls are currently routed through the VOIP trunk as drunken dialing gets expensive. To force a trunk selection, dial 9 before the number to force landline, or 8 before the number to force VOIP.
To use FOP (a GUI to see that extensions are busy, place calls, etc) head to the SIP IP (http://*.*.*.15) and click on the FOP link. This is a useful tool. Learn to love it. While using the web interface, you can also manage your own voicemail settings and should be able to add/remove contacts from SugarCRM. Again, simply click the links.
Inbound calls are presented with an IVR (Interactive Voice Recording) prompting them for an extension choice. Calls without a choice in the given timeout will route to the Cordless, and then on to my voicemail. There is capacity to reroute calls from extensions to outbound lines (eg our mobiles) but I have not yet set this up as it's a bit of an effort for a dubious advantage (and we pay the mobile component of the call).
I think thats the basics covered. More later if required. jelf 18:18, 1 February 2008 (EST)
